What Makes a Good Quality T-Shirt? (Fabric, GSM, Fit Explained)
Not all t-shirts are made the same here’s how to tell the difference before you buy.
Let’s be honest.
Most people don’t know what makes a t-shirt “good.”
They just go by feel, price, or brand name.
But the difference between a ₹500 tee and a ₹2500 tee isn’t random.
It comes down to fabric, GSM, and fit.
Once you understand this, you’ll never buy blindly again.
1. Fabric: The Foundation of Everything
If the fabric is bad, nothing else matters.
A good quality t-shirt usually uses:
- 100% cotton (combed or compact cotton)
- Or cotton blends done right
What to look for:
Combed Cotton
Softer, cleaner, and doesn’t have those tiny rough fibres sticking out.
Compact Cotton
More premium. Feels smoother, holds shape better, and lasts longer.
Breathability
Especially in Indian weather, if it doesn’t breathe, it’s useless.
What to avoid:
- Polyester-heavy fabrics (feel cheap, trap heat)
- Thin cotton that loses shape after 2 washes
- Fabric that feels “nice” but doesn’t hold structure
A good tshirt should feel soft but not weak

2. GSM: The Weight That Changes Everything
GSM = Grams per Square Meter
Basically, how heavy (or dense) the fabric is.
Simple breakdown:
- 140–160 GSM → Light, fast fashion, not very durable
- 180–220 GSM → Balanced, everyday premium
- 240+ GSM → Heavyweight, structured, streetwear feel
What most brands won’t tell you:
Heavier doesn’t always mean better.
But in streetwear?
A slightly heavier tee (200+ GSM) hits different.
- Falls better on the body
- Doesn’t cling
- Feels more premium instantly

3. Fit: Where Most Brands Mess Up
You can have great fabric and GSM —
but if the fit is off, the t-shirt is dead.
The 3 common fits:
Regular Fit
Safe. Basic. Nothing wrong, nothing special.
Slim Fit
Outdated (most of the time). Too tight, not forgiving.
Oversized Fit
Done right = powerful
Done wrong = sloppy
What a good fit should do:
- Sit well on the shoulders
- Fall clean on the body (not clingy, not shapeless)
- Sleeves should hit right (not too tight, not flared weirdly)
The goal is structure + ease
Our oversized t-shirts are designed to sit right on the shoulders and fall clean not sloppy:

4. Construction Details (Most People Ignore This)
This is where real quality shows.
Check these:
- Neck rib → Does it stretch out after 2 wears?
- Stitching → Clean or messy?
- Seams → Do they twist after washing?
- Print quality → Cracks vs stays intact
These small things decide if your tee lasts 2 months or 2 years
5. The Feel Test (Trust This Always)
Before buying, ask yourself:
- Does it feel solid or flimsy?
- Does it fall well or cling awkwardly?
- Does it look better when worn or just on hanger?
Good t-shirts don’t just look good
they hold presence
Final Thought
A good quality t-shirt is not about branding.
It’s about:
- The fabric you feel
- The weight you carry
- The fit you move in
Once you understand this, you stop buying more
and start buying better.
How We Approach It at Urban Theka
At Urban Theka, we don’t lock ourselves into one “standard” fabric and call it a day.
Every t-shirt is treated differently.
We hand-select our fabrics, test them out ourselves, and only move forward when it feels right not just on paper, but on body.
We have our own ways of testing wear, wash, repeat
till we’re fully sure it holds up the way it should.
For certain pieces, we go beyond just fabric:
- We experiment with enzyme washes, stone washes, and peaching to bring out extra softness
- We develop specific fades and textures depending on the vibe of the product
- Some pieces even have hand-distressed neck ribs, done manually — which is why they take time
Nothing is rushed.
A good example of this is our Malwa Block T-Shirt, where the fabric and velvet print were developed to match the story behind it:

Because for us, a t-shirt isn’t just about how it looks on day one
it’s about how it ages, feels, and lives with you over time.
